Description
This second edition book elaborates the evidence-based practice (EBP) process outlined by The Iowa Model Revised: Evidence-Based Practice to Promote Excellence in Health Care, (2017). The model is presented as an algorithm that breaks the EBP process down into manageable steps, each with clear direction. Each step has a dedicated chapter which includes application-oriented resources, as well as examples to support nurses and other clinicians along the way to implementing, evaluating, and sustaining evidence-based practice to address clinical problems and improve health outcomes. The first edition was published in 2017. |
Purpose
This book serves as a resource for healthcare providers to achieve sustainable evidence-based practice in healthcare settings. There is a focus on involving key stakeholders (including patients) and creating a diverse and representative interprofessional team to put EBP into action. The book is comprehensive and covers the EBP process from start to sustainability and provides detailed implementation strategies and a framework for evaluation. The tools, tips, and examples provided in each chapter are meaningful, practical, and translatable to any healthcare problem or setting. |
Audience
The audience of this book is frontline healthcare providers, leaders, and students. It is useful and practical regardless of an individual's level of EBP expertise and can be used by an individual or an interprofessional team. The lead authors of this book are nationally recognized as EBP experts, have authored numerous publications, and have presented nationally and internationally. The contributing authors provide unique expertise from their real-world roles (e.g., director, librarian, research and EBP specialist) that support providers who are engaging in the EBP process in practice settings. |

Features
This book provides a practical guide to using The Iowa Model Revised: Evidence-Based Practice to Promote Excellence in Healthcare (2017) to implement, evaluate, and sustain evidence-based practice to improve health outcomes. The model is represented as an algorithm. Each step of the algorithm has a chapter dedicated to it. Each begins with a thorough yet succinct explanation of the step and ends with summary tips and next steps to move the EBP process along. Each chapter also includes a section focusing on patient preferences, values, and diversity essential to patient-centered, quality care. In addition, several application examples are provided in each chapter, as well as blank copies of the tools created to facilitate each step. The chapters have color-coded alternating tabs for ease of identifying examples and tools as one flips through the book. The tables, figures, and images used in the examples are realistic, in color, and appropriately sized for ease of reading. The book includes a glossary and index. A QR provides readers with a link that allows them access to downloadable tool templates. |

Assessment
This is an excellent resource for nurses, other healthcare clinicians, students, and educators. The combined focus on team science, patient preferences and values, strategies for implementation, and frameworks for evaluation and sustainability make this one of the most comprehensive EBP resources available. In addition, the clear, practical, and downloadable tools are translatable to any healthcare setting (large or small). Further, the discussion on de-implementation (i.e., ways to undo, discontinue, or stop old practices that are ineffective or not evidence-based) is an important addition and includes straightforward strategies and suggestions about how to plan for and address future issues. This is a much needed, user-friendly, discipline-inclusive resource that should be part of any healthcare organization's strategic quality improvement efforts. Nursing and other health discipline educators should consider incorporating this text into their curriculum to support an interprofessional mindset and team science for improving health outcomes through evidence-based practice. |
